But the consequences of that mistake can be serious. Any criminal conviction may result in a criminal record that has an impact for the rest of your life. Call me now for a consultation on a shoplifting charge in Rhode Island, and I'll let you know exactly what I can do to help at (401) 992-4072.

What is Shoplifting ?

Shoplifting is the act of intending to deprive a merchant of the full retail value of any retail merchandise. You can be charged with shoplifting if you leave a store with items you haven't paid for, if you conceal products while in the store, or if you switch price tags within the store.

RI Laws & Penalties on Shoplifting

The penalties for misdemeanor shoplifting is:

  • up to a year in jail
  • fines of $50 - $500, or two time the retail value of the items stolen

Shoplifting becomes a felony charge if there if it is a second (2nd) or subsequent offense, and the item shop lifted is valued at over $100. Under Rhode Island criminal law, felony shoplifting penalties are:

  • up to 5 years in jail
  • fines of up to $5000

Can I beat a Rhode Island Shoplifting Charge?

Yes, there are always legitimate defenses in shoplifting cases, depending on the evidence against you. I will argue for a dismissal of all the charges if the store doesn't have absolutely clear evidence that you stole or intended to steal the items they claim. We can argue unintentional concealment where appropriate. Or we may be able to get the charges dropped or reduced in return for restitution in some cases.

Call me for a case evaluation and consultation, and I'll go over your options and what your best chances are to beat the case.
