Penalties For Firearms Possession under RI Law

Possession of a pistol, revolver, or handgun without a permit: 1-10 years in jail, fines up to $10,000.

Possession of a sawed off shotgun or sawed off rifle: up to 10 years in jail, fines up to $5,000.

Possession of other illegal weapons (including large knives, clubs, martial arts weapons): up to $1000, and a year in jail.

If you are a convicted felon, you are not allowed to have a gun. Penalties for gun possession will be 2-10 years in prison if you are found guilty.

Possession of an air rifle, air pistol, blank gun, BB gun, or other related item will be penalized by fines of up to $50, or up to $100 and 30 days in jail for a 2nd or subsequent offense.

RI Enhanced Gun Possession Penalties

There are significant extra penalties when carrying any weapon, gun, firearm, or related device while committing a felony or crime of violence.

Possession of a Gun while committing a felony: 1-10 years in prison and fines up to $10,000.

Possession of a Gun While Intending to Deliver or Sell Drugs: 2-20 years in prison.
